Business, Commodity, and Diverse Classification Coding Resources

North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) -the standard for classifying business establishments for the collection, tabulation, presentation, and analysis of statistical data.  Groups establishments into industries according to similarity in the processes used to produce goods or services. 

SBA NAICS Lookup Page - This lookup tool helps you to determine if you qualify as "small" and to find your NAICS code or codes. The size standards in this table apply to most of SBA's programs and to many other Federal Government programs and actions where eligibility as a small business is a factor or a consideration.

State of California Resources

California Department of General Services (DGS) Procurement Division (PD) - sets State procurement policies and provides purchasing services.  It delegates purchasing authority; certifies Small and/or Disabled Veteran businesses to do business with the State; sponsors the Small Business Council; participates in the Disabled Veterans Business Enterprise Council; and provides innovative purchasing methods that save taxpayers' dollars, integrating quality solutions to meet customers' needs.

Federal Resources

Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) - primary regulations for use by all federal executive agencies in their acquisition of supplies and services with appropriated funds.

Health & Human Services (HHS) Small Business Office - advocate for small businesses through various program activities and outreach efforts to maximize prime and subcontract acquisition opportunities at the NIH for small businesses owned by the disadvantaged, women, veterans, service-disabled veterans, and Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) concerns.

Small Business Administration (SBA) – Aids, counsels, assists and protects the interests of small businesses as well as helps families and businesses recover from national disasters. Useful information and search tools make this website a must for small business information.

System for Award Management - Federal database for businesses to self-certify themselves with the federal government and become available to federal agencies and organizations seeking businesses with a wide variety of capabilities.  This database has eliminated the need for businesses to register themselves on multiple systems.

Non-Governmental Resources

The following links are for organizations that offer services to suppliers and businesses looking for small and diverse businesses.  Note that a number of these organizations require membership fees and there is no University requirement that small and diverse businesses join these organizations.

National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) - business membership organization. The regional councils certify and match more than 15,000 minority owned businesses with member corporations which want to purchase goods and services.

Small Business Exchange - a business information resource for small Asian, Black, Hispanic woman and disabled veteran-owned businesses

Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) – advocates for women-owned businesses.  Third-party certifier of businesses owned and operated by women in the United States.  Provides its certified women's business enterprises (WBEs) with access to a range of B2B sourcing tools.
